WALK-FOR-LIFE
The “Walk-For-Life” Walk-A-Thon is a prostate cancer awareness event hosted by the LFPCF. The first “Walk-For-Life” Walk-A-Thon was held in Chicago, Illinois in October of 2004. Since that time this event has been supported throughout numerous communities in the United States. This event is a special effort dedicated to raising awareness surrounding prostate cancer.
With an estimated 20 million families currently living without healthcare benefits, the need for early pre-screening, education, proper diet, and annual check-ups can mean life or death to the target audience. While alarming, 26 states within the U.S. don’t have a law mandating that insurance companies cover prostate screening. In a recent study, it was determined that more than 27,350 men will die from prostate cancer in 2006. It is the second leading cause of male cancer death. African American men are 2 1⁄2 times more likely to die from the disease. It is a silent killer.
